Your running across a Field of hills and your coming up to a hill that you can't see over. Would you close your eyes and keep running, even though you did not know what was coming next? Most people would not.
It is that same concept which I believe is the driving force of religion. I do not believe that it is because people strive to be spiritually pure, it's because people are afraid of what they don't know. Death is the final destination of all living things, it is something that binds all people together regardless of what their differences maybe. This thought horrifies people, so much so that it drives some to the point of forcing themselves to believe in religion. All religion is based on speculation, and the writ tings of religion are merely written speculation. If people were to form a religion around children's stories, it would have just as much validity as people that believe in the writ tings found in the bible.
So why do people still buy into religion, how come sensible people let themselves believe in things that make absolutely no sense and have no way of being pr oven? Alto of the times religions contradict themselves. If you think about it death is a terrifying. Realizing that one day you and everyone you know will die, what exactly comes after that? No one knows what comes after death and there is only one way to find out, and that's by dying. And if you die you very well can't come back to talk about it.
Right about then is when religion rears it's ugly little head. Religion provides answers to questions that people do not have answers to. Religion paint a beautiful after life filled with snow-white clouds and choirs of angels, or a blazing eternity of searing flesh scolding pain and torture. You can also come back to life with a different life, that or "float" between "hell" and heaven. Which is "purgatory," purgatory is the life equivalent of the after-life. Even if what comes after is something that isn't pleasant or agreeable it's better than not knowing anything. Well that's the case for most people an way way.
My advise would be to find your own way to live life, and not mold your life around someone else's idea of how it should be lived. Also don't buy into the ridiculous fairy tales that religion sells, if you want to know what comes after death then just wait. You will find out eventually, then all of your question may be answered. I say "may be" because it is very possible that there is nothing after death, and that when a person dies they simply cease to exist. If that's the case then so be it, there is no reason why a person should restrain themselves with religion and live life to the fullest.
